Mangosteen 101: Part Three

Does Mangosteen possess health-promoting properties?

The modern scientific/nutrition community has recently concluded, through its research, that Mangosteen does possess beneficial health-promoting properties. These properties are in the form of beneficial compounds potentially capable of providing a wide spectrum of health benefits.

What are these compounds?

These compounds are called xanthones. Xanthones are a newly-discovered class of plant nutrients that are highly, biologically active. They are unique because they possess very potent antioxidant capabilities.

What are antioxidants and why are they important?

Antioxidants are nutrients that protect cells from oxidative damage resulting from the presence of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that attack stable molecules and wreak havoc within the body. They occur in the body when we overexert ourselves, when we get exposed to pollution or intake chemicals from processed foods and other impurities in our environment.

How many xanthones are in mangosteen?

Over 30 different xanthones have been identified in Mangosteen. Many of these xanthones have been investigated through research, and their ability to positively impact the quality of life has been shown.

Does the entire fruit contain nutrients?

The pulp of the fruit contains vitamins such as vitamin C and minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. The rind of the fruit, known as the pericarp, is particularly rich in valuable xanthones.

How can I obtain mangosteen fruit?

Because fresh mangosteen fruit is not readily available in the United States, the best way to take advantage of its numerous health benefits is to purchase it as a dietary supplement. Vemma's Mangosteen Plus™ provides an excellent source of Mangosteen.

Mangosteen 101 part 2

Does mangosteen fruit grow on a tree or a bush?

Mangosteen fruit grows on one of the slowest growing and longest living tropical trees. Mangosteen trees thrive in ultra-tropical climates with high atmospheric humidity. A seedling tree usually grows about 10-15 years before it yields fruit.

When is the fruit harvested?

When the fruit has a color change from green to reddish-pink, it is ready to be picked. After it has been harvested and the color changes to a dark violet, it is ready to be eaten.

Why has mangosteen recently come to the attention of a wider audience around the world?

Many of the traditional natural healers of Southeast Asia have taken advantage of the beneficial properties of mangosteen for hundreds of years. It has been utilized for numerous health supporting benefits, and westerners who are educated about Asian healing traditions have recently begun to share their knowledge with the rest of the world.
